Beliau berkata kerajaan perlu menangani punca utama kepada masalah itu dahulu iaitu ketidakupayaan sektor pertanian negara untuk memenuhi permintaan domestik.
Katanya langkah sedemikian akan membantu mengurangkan rasa tidak puas hati rakyat terhadap isu kos sara hidup.
Menyatakan akses kepada tanah dan pembiayaan sebagai antara punca utama, katanya: “Cadangan saya kepada kerajaan ialah mempunyai agensi khas hanya untuk menangani isu ini, pastikan tanah mudah didapati dan mempunyai dana khas untuk ini,” katanya pada Kuliah Tunku Abdul Rahman ke-29 di sini hari ini.
Daim berkata birokrasi kementerian dan agensi perlu dikurangkan untuk meningkatkan kecekapan penyampaian dan mewujudkan cara yang lebih mudah untuk menjalankan perniagaan.
“Perlu ada kecekapan dan kita memerlukan orang yang mempunyai integriti untuk menjalankan semua agensi ini,” katanya.
Beliau berkata dengan komitmen kerajaan dan kesediaan rakyat untuk memberi tumpuan kepada sektor pertanian, negara dapat mengurangkan jumlah import makanan agro, yang melebihi RM52 bilion pada tahun lepas, dalam tempoh tiga tahun.
Selain itu, katanya dengan memberi penekanan kepada sektor pertanian, ia akan mewujudkan pekerjaan dan meningkatkan pendapatan dalam sektor ini.
“Akhirnya, apa yang penting ialah kita mempunyai kehidupan yang sihat, kos sara hidup turun, produktiviti meningkat dan pendapatan naik. Jadi, semua orang gembira,” katanya.
