KUALA LUMPUR, 8 Jan 2020 — Hasil penyelidikan Lembaga Minyak Sawit Malaysia (MPOB) berjaya membuktikan penggunaan burung hantu sebagai amalan kawalan biologi terbaik bagi menangani ancaman tikus perosak di ladang-ladang sawit berbanding ular dan monyet.
Malah, Ketua Pengarah MPOB Dr Ahmad Parveez Ghulam Kadir berkata kalangan industri sawit turut menyedari keberkesanan kaedah menggunakan burung hantu dalam aspek kawalan terbabit.
“Buktinya, banyak syarikat-syarikat perladangan seperti Sime Darby Plantation, FELDA, Kulim, United Plantations, IOI, Kuala Lumpur Kepong (KLK) dan Borneo Samudra di Sabah telah melaksanakan kawalan biologi menggunakan burung hantu di ladang masing-masing,” katanya dalam satu kenyataan hari ini.
Kaedah kawalan itu terbukti menerusi satu projek penyelidikan – ‘Biological Control of Rats in Oil Palm Plantations using Barn Owls (Tyto alba javanicus)” (Kawalan Biologi Tikus Di Ladang Sawit Menggunakan Burung Hantu (Tyto alba javanicus) – diketuai oleh Dr Mohd Din Amiruddin pada akhir 1980-an yang dijalankan di estet kendalian Sime Darby, Guthrie dan Kulim.
Projek itu berjaya dari segi penggunaan burung hantu sebagai kawalan biologi tikus dalam kawasan ladang sawit berbanding haiwan lain seperti ular, kata Ahmad Parveez merujuk kepada laporan media dua minggu lepas bertajuk “Sime Darby Prefers Barn Owls To Counter Rodent Infestations.”
Beliau berkata burung hantu misalnya mampu memakan sehingga dua ekor tikus sehari berbanding seekor ular yang cuma makan seekor tikus seminggu.
Sementara itu, penggunaan haiwan seperti kucing pula kurang wajar memandangkan ciri-cirinya sebagai binatang peliharaan dan tidak dapat menyesuaikan diri dengan persekitaran ladang sawit.
Ahmad Parveez turut menyifatkan burung hantu sebagai spesies yang aktif dan keluar pada waktu malam untuk memburu dan bukan satu ancaman kepada ternakan dan lain-lain yang berisiko (aktif pada siang hari), katanya.
Malah, tiada laporan mengenai burung hantu menyerang ternakan seperti unggas.
Beliau berkata, kaedah meningkatkan populasi burung hantu juga boleh dilakukan dengan meletakkan kotak sarang di ladang sawit yang turut digunakan bagi tujuan pembiakan serta menambah bilangan populasinya.
Mengulas penggunaan monyet di ladang-ladang sawit, beliau berkata ianya “tidak sesuai dan tidak praktikal.”
“Ini kerana monyet merupakan haiwan yang hidup secara berkumpulan dan amat aktif pada siang hari dan boleh menjejaskan aktiviti pengurusan ladang kerana pertembungan dengan aktiviti manusia.”
Monyet juga dilaporkan menyebabkan kerosakan pada bunga sawit dan dedaun selain beg khusus bagi tujuan pendebungaan.
“Selain itu, monyet juga berpotensi ganas dan boleh mengancam pekerja (bagi aktiviti memetik buah, pembajaan serta sebagainya) dan menjejaskan kelancaran pengurusan ladang,” katanya.
