KUALA LUMPUR, 1 Jan 2020 — Stesen janaelektrik kitar padu pertama di Asia Tenggara, Stesen Janaelektrik Sultan Ismail (SJSI) di Paka, Terengganu, menamatkan operasinya secara rasmi pada 31 Disember 2019, selepas 33 tahun menyalur bekalan ke Grid Nasional.
Penamatan operasi itu tidak dapat dielakkan lagi memandangkan Malaysia kini dalam proses untuk menggantikan stesen janaelektrik lama yang tidak efisien dengan yang lebih canggih dan mesra alam, sejajar amalan industri bekalan elektrik global masa kini, menurut Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB).
Stesen janaelektrik berkapasiti 1,400 megawatt (MW) itu siap dibina pada 1987 dan dibuka secara rasmi pada 1988 oleh Sultan Terengganu ketika itu, Almarhum Sultan Mahmud Al-Muktafi Billah Shah. Ketika itu, SJSI menjadi stesen janaelektrik kitar padu terbesar di dunia. Kos pembinaannya sebanyak RM1.5 bilion (RM2.4 bilion berdasarkan kadar semasa), katanya menerusi kenyataan akhbar.
โStesen Janaelektrik Sultan Ismail meninggalkan legasi yang besar dalam sejarah TNB. Ia menjadivstesen janaelektrik kitar padu pertama di Asia Tenggara, dan terbesar dibina TNB,โ kata Ketua Pegawai Penjanaan TNB, Ir. Roslan Abdul Rahman.
SJSI menjana tenaga elektrik menggunakan gas asli dan minyak, dengan gas asli sebagai bahan api utama. Sebagai pengguna awal gas asli Petronas dari loji pemprosesan di Kertih, SJSI turut membantu industri minyak dan gas di negeri itu. Bekalan gas diterima menerusi saluran paip terus dari Kertih, sekali gus mengurangkan kos logistik SJSI.
Sepanjang 33 perkhidmatannya, SJSI telah memberi impak kepada kehidupan ramai penduduk Paka dan sekitarnya. Ia telah mewujudkan banyak peluang pekerjaan kepada rakyat Terengganu ketika pembinaannya dan seterusnya ketika beroperasi melalui aktiviti berkaitan penyelenggaraan.
SJSI turut memberi manfaat kepada komuniti setempat melalui program tanggungjawab korporat. Meskipun telah menamatkan operasinya, TNB kekal komited untuk berkongsi kemakmuran menerusi pelbagai program tanggunjawab korporat seperti pemuliharaan habitat kelip-kelip di Yak Yah, Kg Ibok, Kijal; pembinaan kediaman bagi golongan kurang bernasib baik melalui projek Baiti Jannati; dan program dermasiswa My Brighter Future (MyBF) untuk pelajar dari keluarga berpendapatan rendah B40.
SJSI telah diabadikan dalam bentuk setem pos yang dilancarkan Pos Malaysia pada 4 April 1988.
โKetika perkhidmatannya, SJSI telah menghasilkan banyak tenaga kerja mahir yang mendapat manfaat daripada teknologi baharu yang terdapat di stesen itu. Pengetahuan yang diperoleh di SJSI turut dimanfaatkan apabila mereka berkhidmat di stesen janaelektrik lain, termasuk di stesen janaelektrik milik penjana elektrik bebas (IPP),โ kata Roslan.
Sejumlah 250 warga kerja SJSI telah dihantar secara berperingkat ke stesen-stesen baharu TNB seperti Jimah East Power Sdn Bhd di Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan dan Southern Power Generation di Pasir Gudang, Johor.
Menjelang hujung perkhidmatannya, hanya unit 4 yang masih beroperasi. Unit 1, 2 dan 3 telah ditamatkan operasi sejak 2017.
Stesen janaelektrik milik TNB yang turut menggunakan teknologi kitar padu ialah Stesen Janaelektrik Tuanku Jaafar di Port Dickson dengan dua blok berkapasiti 750MW dan Stesen Janaelektrik Prai di Seberang Perai, berkapasiti 1,071MW.
Selepas 33 tahun perkhidmatan, kini tiba masanya untuk SJSI memadamkan lampu.
