KUALA LUMPUR, 5 Ogos: Polis Diraja Malaysia (PDRM) digesa menubuhkan unit khas bagi membantu mengurus sistem keselamatan dan kesihatan pekerjaan (KKP) anggotanya, terutamanya yang berada di lapangan.
Pengerusi Institut Keselamatan dan Kesihatan Pekerjaan Negeri (NIOSH), Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye, berkata purata sekurang-kurangnya 32 pegawai dan anggota polis meninggal dunia setiap bulan berikutan pelbagai kes kemalangan dan penyakit, ketika masih bertugas.
Berdasarkan data antara tahun 2010 dan 2014, menurutnya seramai 1,324 pegawai dan anggota polis maut, manakala 359 yang lain cedera dan terlantar akibat hilang upaya kekal ketika melaksanakan tugasan menjaga keamananan negara.
Akta Keselamatan dan Kesihatan Pekerjaan (OSHA) 1994 turut meletakkan institusi PDRM sebahagian daripada sektor yang perlu mematuhi keperluan keselamatan dan kesihatan pekerjaan.
“Insiden terbaru membabitkan lapan anggota polis yang mengadu tidak sihat selepas terhidu bahan kimia ketika memeriksa 15 tong, dipercayai mengandungi sodium sianida di sebuah ladang kelapa sawit di Karak, Khamis lalu,” katanya, merujuk kejadian pada 1 Ogos lalu itu.
Lee, memetik kenyataan yang dikeluarkan pada Isnin, berkata penubuhan Unit KKP itu dapat membantu PDRM mengurangkan kadar kematian dan kemalangan dari kalangan pegawai dan anggota polis yang kebanyakannya berlaku semasa bertugas atau dalam perjalanan pergi dan balik ke lokasi tugasan.
“Jika kita ingin melihat sektor ini berkembang baik dari sudut pengurusan KKP, maka penubuhan Unit KKP menjadi satu keperluan sepertimana Kementerian Kesihatan Malaysia yang telah pun mewujudkan unit ini.
“Sehubungan itu, NIOSH sebagai sebuah agensi yang diberikan tanggungjawab untuk meningkatkan tahap KKP dalam negara, bersedia membantu PDRM menubuhkan Unit KKP dengan menyediakan tenaga pakar dan modul latihan bersesuaian,” tambahnya.
