SEREMBAN, 24 Julai 2019 — Universiti-universiti awam harus berusaha keras untuk mengurangkan dan menghapuskan ketidakjujuran dan budaya kerja yang tidak beretika dalam institusi itu kerana ia mewakili kerajaan dan negara dalam pendidikan tinggi sebagai entiti awam.
Presiden Kongres Persatuan Akademik Malaysia (MAAC) Prof Datuk Dr Mohd Idrus Mohd Masirin berkata semua universiti awam berusaha keras untuk meningkatkan prestasi universiti agar setaraf atau tidak lebih baik daripada yang lain seluruh dunia.
“Persoalan sama ada integriti masih hidup atau tidak di universiti awam di Malaysia tidak pernah menjadi isu besar kerana universiti awam sentiasa dipantau dan diteliti dengan rapi oleh banyak agensi termasuk MQA (Badan Kelayakan Malaysia), badan akreditasi profesional, Jabatan Audit Negara dan tidak lupa Suruhanjaya Pencegahan Rasuah Malaysia (SPRM).
“Dalam kes integriti akademik atau plagiarisme seperti yang didakwa oleh graduan sebuah universiti awam, ini bukan kes terpencil di dunia. Ia berlaku di seluruh dunia kerana pensyarah atau penyelia adalah pengarah penyelidikan untuk pelajar semasa pengajian mereka,” katanya kepada Bernama di sini, hari ini.
Beliau berkata ketika diminta mengulas laporan berita oleh berita dalam talian tempatan baru-baru ini tentang dakwaan ketidakjujuran akademik dan bersetuju bahawa terdapat keperluan untuk memeriksa dan mengimbanginya untuk memastikan integriti akademik.
Mohd Idrus berkata sebagai ahli akademik, beliau percaya kedudukan akademik dan reputasi tidak diperolehi dengan menghasilkan banyak karya atau karya penyelidikan, tetapi ia diberikan melalui pengiktirafan oleh masyarakat secara keseluruhan.
Seorang ahli akademik dianggap berjaya jika dia dapat membuktikan keupayaannya untuk menyumbang kepada masyarakat melalui kepakaran dan pengetahuannya. Reputasi akademik tidak bergantung kepada penerbitan atau penyelidikan sahaja tetapi, lebih penting berkaitan dengan sumbangan kepada kesejahteraan masyarakat.
