KUALA LUMPUR, 2 Julai 2019 — Kalangan penggiat industri minyak sawit Malaysia sedang melakukan usaha bersepadu bersama Majlis Minyak Sawit Malaysia (MPOC) membabitkan langkah penanaman semula sawit, kata Menteri Industri Utama, Teresa Kok Suh Sim.
Menurutnya, MPOC telah memperuntukkan sejumlah RM1.5 juta bagi penanaman semula sebanyak sejuta pokok kelapa sawit di kawasan seluas 2,500 di Hilir Kawag, Lahad Datu, Sabah, bagi tempoh 10 tahun akan datang.
Kok berkata peringkat pertama projek penanaman semula itu termasuk menyediakan pusat pemuliharaan hidupan liar yang sememangnya penting selain mewujudkan koridor makanan hidupan tersebut, sekali gus menyediakan lebih banyak ruang dan perlindungan spesies terancam termasuk gajah pygmy Borneo dan orang utan daripada menjadi mangsa pencerobohan dan kepupusan.
“Usaha ini membuktikan kepada dunia bahawa industri minyak sawit ini amat peka dan prihatin dengan alam sekitar dan terbabit menanam semula lebih banyak pokok.
“Kita juga berharap usaha seperti ini dapat menepis kritikan terhadap industri minyak sawit negara. Apa yang penting, kita mahu mereka (pengkritik) untuk turut peka dengan pelbagai usaha murni yang dilaksanakan oleh Kerajaan Malaysia,” katanya dalam satu kenyataan media di sini, hari ini.
Beliau sebelum itu bersama-sama Timbalan Ketua Menteri Sabah, Datuk Christina Liew menyaksikan majlis pemeteraian perjanjian antara MPOC yang diwakili oleh Ketua Pegawai Eksekutifnya, Datuk Dr. Kalyana Sundram dan Ketua Konservator Hutan Sabah, Datuk Mashor Mohd Jaini.
Perjanjian itu sebagai mengesahkan ikrar Kementerian Industri Utama untuk bekerjasama dengan Jabatan Perhutanan Sabah bagi penanaman sawit di kawasan Hilir Kawag tersebut yang juga antara inisiatif susulan pelancaran Kempen Sayangi Sawit oleh Perdana Menteri Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad pada 24 Mac, 2019.
Selain itu, dalam kenyataan itu, Kok turut menggesa komuniti global untuk melihat pelbagai langkah dilaksanakan oleh penggiat industri sawit bagi membantu pekebun kecil dan golongan miskin serta sumbangannya terhadap perlindungan alam sekitar dan pemuliharaan hidupan liar.
“Malah, terdapat beberapa penggiat industri yang memberi komitmen untuk menggerakkan pekerja masing-masing bagi tujuan penanaman semula. Adalah diharapkan inisiatif ini dapat disempurnakan lebih awal daripada sasaran 10 tahun tersebut,” kata beliau.
